What is a Birth Doula?
A birth doula provides informational, emotional, and physical support to women and their families as they transition from pregnancy through birth.
Why have a Birth Doula?
The continuous support of a doula during labor and birth improves outcomes for families.
Birth doula support reduces risk of:
- cesarean birth
- assisted delivery (i.e. forceps or vacuum)
- labor augmentation with pitocin
- need for pain medications
Mothers with birth doula support are more likely to:
- have shorter labors
- feel satisfied with their birth experience
- be breastfeeding at 6 weeks
- have positive feelings toward baby
