What is a Birth Doula?

A birth doula provides informational, emotional, and physical support to women and their families as they transition from pregnancy through birth.

Why have a Birth Doula?

The continuous support of a doula during labor and birth improves outcomes for families.

Birth doula support reduces risk of:

  • cesarean birth
  • assisted delivery (i.e. forceps or vacuum)
  • labor augmentation with pitocin
  • need for pain medications

Mothers with birth doula support are more likely to:

  • have shorter labors
  • feel satisfied with their birth experience
  • be breastfeeding at 6 weeks
  • have positive feelings toward baby
